Many people don’t realize that there is more than one way to create flame resistant clothing. One is to treat flammable fabrics – such as cotton – with chemicals or products that can render the fabric flame resistant. We believe that if you need flame resistant clothing for work or extreme situations, you need another solution.
Our solution is to start with flame resistant fabric, so that all our clothes have protection woven right in. We use flame resistant fabrics containing modacrylic fibers, first developed in1949. Considered safe enough for children’s clothes and consumer products, modacrylic fibers deliver a powerful protective punch. Modacrylic is not only flame resistant, but it is also self-extinguishing. It is also no drip, no melt, and comfortable enough to be worn every day. Plus, since the flame resistance is built right in, protection won’t wear away in the wash, which is a real concern with flame resistant clothes that are simply treated with chemicals.
Unlike many other flame resistant fabrics, Modacrylic forms a char barrier when flame or high heat occur, and this can help prevent many injuries. When the fabric is exposed to flame, it off-gasses, effectively depleting the flame of oxygen. When the flame is gone, the fabric leaves behind a char barrier that cools very quickly and does not drip or melt. This helps prevent trauma and serious burns. Unlike many FR garment makers, we believe that comfort is an integral part of safety. When employees don’t wear flame resistant clothes in the workplace because those clothes are uncomfortable, tragedy can result. If clothes are so uncomfortable and warm that they are distracting, that, too can lead to workplace accidents. We make our clothes as lightweight and comfortable as possible. Our fr pants and other clothes dry faster and wick moisture away from the body. They keep you at a comfortable temperature as well so that you stay safe and comfortable. DRIFIRE garments are flame resistant, not flame proof. They are not intended to protect you from prolonged exposure to flame.
